By Gabrielle Stuart A REBUILD worker has revealed how he broke into a blazing house in an attempt to save well-known photographer Len Wesney. Keegan Hewlett, 23, kicked in the door of the Cashel St property in the early hours of Monday morning only to be forced back when the roof Keegan caved in. Hewlett “I booted it about three times and got the hinges off, then I saw the chain lock was snubbed, which made me think someone must be inside. But as the door came down the hallway ceiling collapsed. I would have been burned as soon as I got in,” he said. The house was full of flames and smoke, and the heat was intense. “The police said I did all I could and, if I had gone in, I wouldn’t have come out,” he said. Mr Wesney, 70, perished in the blaze. Fire investigators said yesterday the cause of the fire was accidental. His death has been referred to the coroner. Mr Hewlett was driving home after a night-shift about 3.30am on Monday, when he saw thick black smoke pouring from the house. •Turn to page 3

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK WE HAVE some very telling photos on pages 1, 6 and 7 of what people are having to go through to get to Christchurch Hospital. The waiting area at the park and ride site on Deans Ave is a shambles. On Monday, a pregnant woman, and a child recovering from pneumonia, were among the people standing in the pouring rain waiting for a ride to the hospital. There is shelter inside but the system means that if you don’t want to lose your spot in the queue, you don’t go inside. Those people standing outside vented their anger about the hospital parking situation to reporter Gabrielle Stuart on Monday. A few months ago The Star highlighted the appalling car parking situation and called on the city’s leaders to use the playing fields near the hospital as a temporary solution. The idea was roundly applauded by readers. But when it came to the city’s leaders it fell on deaf ears. They should look very carefully at today’s photos. – Barry Clarke

News Families say thank you PIKE RIVER families have given a big thank you to Star readers. In December, The Star launched a campaign to halt likely moves to seal the mine – asking readers to voice their opinions. Literally hundreds of people responded – most agreeing the mine shouldn’t be sealed; some disagreed. And yesterday, the families took the next step forward in their bid to retrieve their loved ones when they signed a memorandum with Labour, United Future, Maori Party, Green Party and New Zealand First to create a special agency solely in charge of the mine recovery effort. They have agreed to create a minister responsible for the reentry of the mine if they

hold the reins of power. That now takes the issue into the political arena, where people who have views on the issue could decide who to vote for on the basis of yesterday’s accord. Bernie Monk, who lost his son Michael in the tragedy, yesterday thanked Star readers for getting behind the newspaper’s campaign. “It (the campaign) was very humbling. I thank the people who got behind it and The Star,” he said. The agency would be set up within 100 days of a new government, and has a Parliamentary majority. Solid Energy, which bought the closed Pike River Mine in 2012, two years after the explosion that killed 29 men, is currently being wound up and will cease to exist by March next year.

$29M ROADWORKS New maintenance contracts worth $29 million annually have been awarded for the city’s roads. The city council contracts have been broken down to three areas. City Care will cover the north, Higgins will cover the south, and the central city maintenance will be done by HEB. The contracts will come into effect on October 1 and cover about 1600km of road. Rami Sherman, now 64, was operations officer of the Israel Defence Forces unit that plotted how to rescue 102 hostages at Uganda’s Entebbe Airport on June 27, 1976. He is here and in Australia to give public talks on the hijacking. He speaks at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand, Wigram, at 2pm on Sunday. The hijacking of an Air France plane by Palestinian and German terrorists after it left Athens had a Christchurch connection – the then general manager of The Star Colin Hardie and his wife Nola were on the flight. Idi Amin Mr Hardie wrote notes on his arms so they could be used for an exclusive article in The Star. He passed away in 2012, aged 90. Pregnant woman, sick child Christchurch Hospital’s park and ride service was set up to take pressure off the lack of parking near the hospital. But as reporter Gabrielle Stuart found out, it is not suited for wet weather PEOPLE WHO lined up in driving rain for 30min to catch a shuttle to Christchurch Hospital have vented their anger. On Monday, when the region was being drenched with rain, hospital visitors and patients endured terrible conditions. The Star went to the Deans Ave park and ride service and found about 30 people cold and wet waiting for the shuttle to arrive. They included a child with pneumonia, elderly people, people on crutches, and a heavily pregnant woman. The size of the waiting room means people have to stand outside. Park and ride is run by the Canterbury District Health Board as a stop-gap measure until a permanent parking building can be built, to alleviate the hospital’s chronic parking shortage. It uses three 12-seater vans to shuttle people to and from the site. Land on Antigua St has been set aside for a hospital parking building, but it cannot be built

until hospital services there are moved, which is set to take about three years. In May, The Star campaigned to have Hagley Park’s Hospital Corner used for temporary car parking. But Mayor Lianne Dalziel and CDHB chief executive David Meates said at the time it was not an option they were considering. Yesterday, CDHB support services manager Rachel Cadle said the health board did not receive any funding for the service or revenue from the car park, which was run by a private operator. That meant it did not have the resources or facilities to provide enough shelter, she said. “On wet days, it is almost impossible to provide for everyone without permanent facilities.” She said the CDHB was considering using bigger busses, and had requested that the car park operator resurface the car park. The CDHB had received 120 comments about the service since it began, and more than 80

per cent had been positive, she said. Minister supporting Greater Christchurch Regeneration Nicky Wagner would not say if she had asked for other hospital parking options to be looked at, saying it was not part of the ministerial portfolio. “The park and ride model has been relatively successful, but obviously there are some issues, including what happens in wet weather. I encourage the operator to take another look at its model,” she said. Labour Canterbury Issues spokeswoman Megan Woods said it was a very serious situation, and an urgent solution was needed. THREE-YEAR-OLD Logan Wing has had pneumonia for two weeks. On Monday, he was finally getting better – but waiting 25min in the rain for the shuttle was the last thing he or his mother, Kelly, needed. She held him while they waited in line, bundled up in jackets. He hid his face in her neck, sheltering from the wind which drove the rain into their backs. “He was pretty frozen by the time we got into hospital,” she said. She said they left their Rangiora home before 9am and did not get home until noon – all for a 20min check-up with a specialist. She said a car park was urgently needed close to the hospital. She said building a temporary car park on Hagley Park’s Hospital Corner seemed like an obvious solution. “There are so many sports fields around. A WEEK ago, six-year-old Jaxon was in hospital for surgery. On Monday, he was due for a post-surgery check up – so his mum, Robyn Bellve, bundled him into the car and drove from their Rolleston home into the city. Then they spent 20min standing in line in the rain. Jaxon was too heavy for his mum to carry him, and the surface of the car park was too rough for her to take his pushchair. So he stood miserably, holding her hand. She said Jaxon had spent most of his young life in and out of hospital with a range of health issues. But getting there had become harder and harder since the onstreet Oxford Tce car parks they used until early this year were removed. She said Jaxon was on the autism spectrum, so he found waiting, especially in unfamiliar places, very difficult. “On a day like today, it was terrible. I’m only just starting to calm him down now,” she told The Star late on Monday afternoon.

While in the hospital for his surgery, she met other parents facing similar problems. “The hospital told one of the mums in our ward you can go now. But her boy was asleep after the surgery, so she had to carry him back to her car. She said how do I carry the bags and the child when I can’t leave him alone?”

Fashion icons inspire teenage

Three Christchurch teenagers will have their garments showcased at New Zealand Fashion Week in Auckland later this month. Julia Evans reports FASHION heavyweights Iris Apfel, David Bowie and Audrey Hepburn have provided the inspiration to young designers whose work will be showcased at New Zealand Fashion Week. Iris Apfel The style of 95-year-old fashion icon Iris Apfel is synonymous with bright, bold, clashing David Bowie colour palettes and textures. That’s what inspired Rangi Ruru’s Jane Boyle, 16, when creating the Audrey Hepburn show-stopping jacket, which won her the supreme award at the Brother Design Stars

competition. Jane will be at fashion week in Auckland on August 30 to follow designs on the runway at its Graduate Show. The jacket, made from a combination of worn leather and recycled material, was entirely hand crafted.

“Iris helped to inspire me and push past my boundaries and incorporate technique, colour and texture all into one jacket,” she said. Jane put her heart and soul into the jacket, which took more than 80 hours to create. “I made each and every one

of the tassels covering the sleeve and hand braided and cut the front panels of the jacket,” she said. Jane said there were many hours spent handmaking the tassels in front of the television. She also won the

top award for her category, years 10 to 13, in the Brother competition. Another Rangi student, Maddie Wall, 16, will also have a garment on show at fashion week. Although Maddie is not heading up herself, she earned a spot as a finalist in the competition’s year 10 to 13 category. Her work was inspired by another music and fashion icon – the late David Bowie. “Bowie used colourful fabrics, amazing textures and shapes to create unique pieces of clothing that not many other people would wear in public . . . Weather wrecks park’s $1.4m upgrade By Bridget Rutherford SPORTS FIELDS in South Hagley Park’s Hospital Corner need to be renovated due to wet weather, less than a year after getting a $1.4 million upgrade. But the city council says the fields performed exactly as expected this winter. The fields were upgraded last year so winter sport could be played on them after suffering damage in the February 22 earthquake. City council neighbourhood and sports parks operations manager Al Hardy said the

upgrade involved the rebuild of three cricket pitches, four sand turfs and one soil turf. No 2 cricket block and outfield was also replaced. Mr Hardy said the fields were well used during winter. The fields needed under sowing, fertilisation and top dressing

on the worn areas, and the irrigation system would be checked, costing about $20,000, he said. He said given the wet weather, the grounds had worn as expected. “The wear from usage should not be mistaken for deterioration.”

In the meantime, the team has been training at Linwood Park – home of Linwood rugby league. Canterbury Rugby chief executive Nathan Godfrey said they had spent a “significant amount” installing a sand-based turf at Rugby Park over summer. He said because the turf had

still been in use during the Crusaders season, it did not have time to bed down. As a result, Canterbury would move out of Rugby Park for the season to give it time to regenerate and be ready to use by Christmas, he said. Mr Godfrey said it was yet to be finalised where the team would move to. “We’re just working through those plans at the moment.” The UC Championship final next weekend will be played at

ED social workers feel the brunt By Gabrielle Stuart CASES OF abandoned children, domestic violence and brutal assaults have left social workers at the Christchurch Hospital Emergency Department under pressure. An overflowing ED, workers struggling to get the minimum nine hour break between shifts and growing costs are some of the problems described in a report prepared for a Canterbury District Health Board committee. It put the problems down to growing numbers of people in ED, and “anecdotal evidence of increased societal dysfunction”. Allied Health executive director Stella Ward (right) said the team’s work included cases of suspected domestic violence, child or elderly abuse, supporting patients and families in crisis, and addressing conflicts between patients and providers. Social Work Department staff ran the 24-hour service on-call, after their usual shifts, the report said. “The call back duties often result in staff members needing

to be ‘stood down’ to achieve the obligatory nine hour break period between shifts,” it said. The cost of the service almost doubled in the past year to more than $135,000, from about $73,000 the year before. The numbers showed ED was over capacity more often in the past year to June, with 201 days where more than 50 people were waiting in ED, compared with 146 the year before. That was up from just 21 days over capacity four years ago. “The current social work service delivery model is not

sustainable,” the report said. It said a proposal for a formal rostered service in ED was being developed. The report is set to be put to the CDHB Hospital Advisory Committee in October. Committee chairman Andrew Dickerson said he could not say if extra support or funding would be given to the service. He said understanding the size of the problem was the first step. The problems reflected continuing post-earthquake stress in the community, he said. “This is consistent with what

Plan to reduce emergency department waiting times A CANTERBURY hospital service manager is one of two people appointed to reduce the time patients have to wait at emergency departments across the country. CDHB service improvement lead Carol Limber was appointed to the Ministry of Health role last week, alongside Auckland emergency medicine specialist Dr Peter Jones. The new roles were announced by Minister of Health Jonathan Coleman, who said the aim was to better manage acute demand, and make sure more patients were seen within a six hour target. “It takes a whole-of healthcare system approach to reduce stays in EDs, including home and primary care to ensure people can live well with long-term conditions. For older people especially it is important to enable high quality care for effective rehabilitation and recovery after acute events,” he said.

Whitebait benefit from unmown river banks By Bridget Rutherford A NO mowing trial along the banks of the Avon and Heathcote rivers has helped improve the whitebait spawning habitat. The city council will now look at what else it can do to enhance the habitat for inanga – an endangered species of whitebait. The trial has been running since October with sections of the banks left unmown. A survey done in April found it had been beneficial. City council three waters and waste planning and delivery manager John Moore said staff would meet with the Ōpāwaho-Heathcote River Network next month to discuss options for habitat enhancement. A budget had been allocated for restoration work, he said. “We will be reviewing results of the trial in the next couple of months before making a decision about the next steps,” Mr Moore said. He said that could include native plantings and providing a clear boundary for bank mowing in other areas. The whitebaiting season opened on Tuesday. Last week activists called for whitebaiting to be banned for a year to allow the depleted population to recover. The Department of Conservation said habitat loss was a key factor in the population decline. Mr Moore said city council ecologists had asked Regenerate Christchurch to protect and enhance spawning habitat in the Ōtākaro/Avon River Corridor Regeneration Plan.

Labour pledges quake support for children CHILDREN IN Canterbury and Kaikoura will get dedicated mental health support to help them overcome earthquake-related trauma under a Labour government, leader Jacinda Ardern (right) says. Ardern made the policy announcement in Christchurch yesterday, vowing to fund an extra 80 mental health professionals over the next three years who will work in all public primary and intermediate schools. It would result in there being a full-time mental health professional for every 500 school children in Canterbury. “I know that the kids of Canterbury still bear the mental scars of the earthquakes and that the Government sadly hasn’t done what’s needed,” Ardern said. “Since 2011, there’s been a 73 per cent increase in children and young people going to mental health clinics. “There’s a need for action as we know that waiting times for children under-12 for mental health services in Christchurch have been deteriorating.” Labour says there are currently

just seven full-time Canterbury District Health Board staff in its school mental health team – covering more than 136 schools in the region. Ardern pledged to invest an extra $10 million in a range of mental health professionals, including psychologists and psychotherapists as well as social workers, registered nurses and community mental health workers. “These new teams will complement Labour’s plan to roll out school based health services in all public secondary schools and create eight primary mental health care teams in GP practises including Canterbury,” she said. “We can afford this by boosting health funding by $8 billion and restore the $2.3 billion that this Government has failed to provide for demographic pressures and inflation. “It’s time we did a lot more to help the young people of Christchurch and Kaikoura through the terrible legacy of the earthquakes. We’ll make sure in these critical early years, they get all the help they need to allow them to grow up as happy, healthy Kiwis.

Check out a new shopping experience

LIVE MUSIC, an espresso bar, touch screen technology, compostable bags and an extensive range of food and beverages. If you thought this would be a regular supermarket – think again. The Crossing’s FreshChoice City Market will open its doors on Tuesday after almost five years from the first conversation to bringing it into fruition. Owners Neville and Heather Brown hope it will offer a different experience for the people of Christchurch, who will be the first in the country to trial some new initiatives. “We have pushed the boundaries to a new level for a supermarket experience for our shoppers and to encourage them to support Christchurch and the central city rebuild,” Heather said. As you come through the main entrance to City Market, customers are welcomed by Lil’ Ruby Espresso, which has already opened. The grocery industry is a family business for the Browns, and Neville’s mother Ruby was no different. “It’s a salute to Lil’ Ruby,” The espresso bar provides a range of lunch time food and Allpress coffee made with a La Marzocco espresso machine – all prepared by qualified chefs and baristas. Heather said it is the perfect place for someone to stop and enjoy a superb coffee at the relaxed communal table, or get yourself a caffeine fix on the run. Those in a hurry will be able to order and pay for their coffee on the self serve touchscreen or through the Lil’ Ruby app on their phone. It was decided to have live music as part of the experience at City Market. They bought a piano which was saved from the Christchurch Catholic Cathedral Music Centre following the February 22, 2011, earthquake. It now sits proudly in City Market. Heather has chosen almost every piece of music that will play through the supermarket on a high level sound system to enhance the ambiance for shoppers’ pleasure. At different times of the week City Market will have professional piano and saxophone players to perform and entertain shoppers. “We will invite shoppers or visitors in the store to give us a tune on the piano when the musicians are not present.” City Market’s philosophy is loyal to local. Where possible, they want to showcase local growers and producers from right here in

Canterbury. “We are looking to profile local artisan companies and producers, as well as giving them a platform to showcase their goods.” That’s part of their “food families” philosophy. Heather said they included local or New Zealand-owned companies that had a long history of success, produced top quality products and had excellent ethical practices. Some of those brands, including Peter Timbs, Theo’s Fish, Vic’s Bakery and Divine Cakes, would all be sold at City Market. Others were The Good Oil Co, Chocolate Traders, Wash Creek Organic Lamb and Beef, J. Friend and Co Honey, Craft Farmers Co Op Organic Eggs, Breads of Europe and Jaime les Macaron to name a few. But in saying that, City Market will also feature international products that were rarely available elsewhere, or exclusive. It has an extensive range of local and international wines and beers, including its very own private labels and a new release of Our House red and white wines at an exceptionally good price. The selection is suited to everyone’s budgets and palates. City Market also has the full

range of supermarket items at very low prices to cater for customers’ full shopping baskets. Even though the store looks impressive, our prices are competitive. With the new supermarket came the opportunity to trial new things. City Market will have the country’s first touch screen electronic product finder. Customers can go to a screen and type in the name of the product they want. It will then direct the customer to the right aisle. When they get to the aisle, the electronic price ticket flashes so the customer can see where it was – a fast and easy product finder. It will also be possible to use this application from your phone. City Market has imported a beautifully designed trolley that will have you zipping around the aisles effortlessly. To help people feel relaxed and at home, City Market’s decor includes black chandeliers, an antique Chinese cabinet, a French Country dining table and chairs, an African drum display table and more. Heather said they had also been very conscious of their packaging and refrigeration systems. They have installed an energy saving, eco-friendly refrigeration

system that has a low carbon footprint. City Market will also trial 100 per cent compostable bags made of cornstarch. They will be one of the first supermarkets in New Zealand to trial these. Heather said they are testing the bags for strength and durability. FreshChoice City Market will have a community fund where a financial grant is given out on a monthly basis. “Because we are in the central city, we’ve chosen the City Mission to be the recipient of our community donation,” Heather said. Food that had not been sold would also be donated. “We chose to partner with the City Mission because we’re a CBD store. We’re mindful of the social challenges some people face in the central city.” The Browns want convenience for shoppers to be a priority at City Market. Through Click and Collect, customers will be able to do their shopping online, and pick it up. A new initiative, City Market Business Box, aims to make it easy for businesses to order online and have their supplies delivered. Businesses can also order

fresh flowers to put on display in their reception area from City Market’s wide selection. There will be 12 checkouts, some of which will be selfservice, and some that will have friendly staff ready to serve you. Extra supervisors will be on hand to assist people with the self-scan checkouts, but they are very user-friendly, Heather said. The Browns made the decision to develop a central city supermarket to “do their part” in the rebuild, as supermarkets helped establish communities and bring people together. Heather said they hope people will enjoy this new shopping experience, whether it is workers stopping for a quick bite, people doing their weekly shop, or those looking for specialist products. Tribute to Annette King PARLIAMENT is full of traditions. One of these traditions that I really enjoy is the speeches that MPs who are leaving give in the final days of the House sitting. Hearing the reminiscences and tales (tall and not so tall) from senior retiring members never fails to enthral and entertain me. No matter which political party the member is from, I make a point of getting to as many of these final or valedictory speeches as I can. Good speeches make you both laugh and cry but, most importantly, they make you think about what change needs to happen in New Zealand. Last week, we heard an extraordinary speech from Annette King. Somehow Annette, New Zealand’s longest serving woman MP, managed to seamlessly move through her 30 years in Parliament. Her stories were hilarious, but her speech also revealed a woman who loved and cared for people. Her career was underwritten by the twin desires to help people and to make New Zealand better.

She was born in Murchison in the immediate post World War 2 years and joined Labour after Norman Kirk led the party to victory in 1972. She was a key figure in both the 1984 Lange Government and the fifth Labour Government a decade later led by Helen Clark. Annette has strong links to Christchurch and has been a frequent visitor to our city over the years. She lived in the McLean Mansion in Manchester St as a young dental nurse and she opened the new Christchurch Hospital as Minister of Health. Anyone who has ever met Annette will know about her extreme warmth. Since I came into Parliament six years ago, she has guided and supported me. It has been a privilege to work alongside her and no matter how difficult things have seemed, she has always led me to believe that it will all work out in the end. •Megan Woods is Labour’s Canterbury spokeswoman

City councillor Jamie Gough voted against adopting the Living Wage and asked why city council staff should be paid more than others doing the same job elsewhere Steph Brook – Or maybe councils, who are after all leaders in the community, should lead the way in treating the people of that community with dignity and respect. The Living Wage is well researched, both in the level it’s set at and also in that organisations and businesses that move to living wages for their employees benefit from increased productivity and engagement by employees who are no longer stressed by trying to provide for their families, battling ill health and the innumerable other stressors asso-

ciated with poverty. It also saves the organisation money in that staff stay in their roles longer, reducing constant re-employment and training costs. Ratepayers money will in effect be utilised better in all ways. As to students, paying them fairly also reduces their stressors if they are balancing study with work as so many of them do. This would enable them to have a better work, study, life balance. Treat people well and they thrive. Hamish Middleton – If you try to separate liveable wage amounts from a couple with kids to a single 20-year-old, you run into the problem that they’re doing the same job so deserve the

same pay. $20.20 is still not going to make a 20-year-old wealthy. If they work 60 hours a week for 10 years, they may be able to save a deposit for their first home. Jamie Rapsey – Mr Jamie Gough wouldn’t know what it’s like to live on a low income. He does have a fair point but it’s a different story when your born into money. Col Houston – When you have a left-leaning city council led by a socialist mayor, it’s the type of policy you can expect. Half-baked policy without thought for consequences, just like they do nationwide in the upcoming elections.

Key building marks milestone for rebuild ONLINE AUCTION PRIME MINISTER Bill English made a flying visit to Christchurch last Thursday — a day of events cut short by heavy fog and flight delays. I too missed my first appointment of the day, the opening of the Pita Te Hori Centre (formerly the King Edward Barracks site). While deeply disappointed to miss such an important occasion, I’m grateful to Mayor Lianne Dalziel for stepping up and officially opening the centre on my behalf. Pita Te Hori was the final development to be completed under the Christchurch Integrated Government Accommodation programme, a key element of the city’s 2012 blueprint. CIGA was all about kick-starting the rebuild, renewing economic activity and creating spin-offs for local businesses by bringing Government workers back to the city centre. There are now 13 — soon to be 15 — Government agencies working more closely and innovatively across four central locations. That’s more people using the bus interchange, shopping in the retail precinct and dining at local cafes and restaurants — all adding to the vibe and excitement of the city. Mid-afternoon the prime minister and

Nicky Wagner I met on Armagh St to announce the Government had awarded a $240 million contract to complete the design and construction of Christchurch Convention Centre. With the capacity to hold large international conferences or much smaller community events, this world-class boutique facility will be the cornerstone of a revitalised central city. The last event of the day was the opening of Kilmarnock Enterprises’ Basecamp — the home of its new training academy. Kilmarnock is a fantastic social enterprise dedicated to helping intellectually disabled people into work. The prime minister is a champion of change within the disability sector, so there was a real air of excitement about the opportunities ahead. Mobile Health has come a long way Stuart Gowland, who founded the travelling mobile surgical bus 15 years ago, stepped back from his role as managing director of the Mobile Health company last week. He spoke with Gabrielle Stuart So where did the surgical bus start? We started working on the idea when I was a surgeon at Christchurch Hospital in the 1990s. At that time a lot of funding issues were going on, similar to what is going on now. But in the midst of all that a new treatment for kidney stones came out. It worked similar to a loudspeaker, but it could focus sound waves on a stone and shatter it, so it was like no-touch surgery. Before, you would need surgery, then a week in the hospital, then weeks off work after that, but this completely changed that. So we wanted a machine. And we decided the best way to get one was as a mobile machine, so the cost could be shared. The kidney stone bus has been going for 22 years now, going up and down the country between hospitals. So that was one kind of treatment – how did the surgery bus develop? It was the same principle: If something’s expensive, always look at a way of sharing it. But the surgical bus was different, nearly twice as big with a lot more technology, so it was much more difficult to start – we began working on it around 1998, and it was in 2002 we organised the Government partnership. The brief was to do low-risk elective surgery in rural towns, with about 22 or 23 of them in a circuit. And to train up local nurses to do the work. We bring a driver, a clinical nurse leader

and a technician, then there are four from a local hospital, two to work on the bus and two on recovery. That does two things. It means people in small towns can get surgery and care afterward in their own communities. And it gives medical teams in those towns exposure to procedures they may not otherwise see. A lead clinical nurse in a small community might not experience that kind of work otherwise, but they could be the first to come across a car accident in the community, where that knowledge could help to save a life. If it took years to get off the ground, that must have been pretty demoralising – what kept you going? You’ve got to have good colleagues, the people around me were all quite motivated, and you’ve got to have a good wife, too. We eventually did it, although it took a while, there

is always politics around this kind of thing. I think the politicians finally said yes, we’ll do it, because they got sick of hearing from us. Although I have to say the politicians at the time were actually really supportive. Annette King was in Parliament at that time, and she was fantastic at pushing the bus, so to speak. Tell me how you first got into medicine? I don’t have a chance, actually, because however many Gowlands ahead of me had done

it, both here and in England, so I didn’t have a chance, for better or worse. So were you pushed into it? I wouldn’t say pushed, but I had grown up knowing so much about medicine and so many people involved in it. But I always wanted to leave home and go study in Dunedin, so I was very eager for that. So what were your student days like? You weren’t down on Hyde St? No, but I was in a flat which was fairly infamous, which they called Toad Hall. Just because it had a willow tree outside it. So where was your first job? After I graduated I worked in Wellington, in house surgery, and then in Dunedin in the anatomy department, which generally then was something you had to do if you wanted to work in surgery. After leaving Dunedin I spent a few years working overseas, in Australia and South Africa and London

and Los Angeles. How different were the hospitals over there? The most amazing thing was to meet names you’ve read about, very skilled people and often multi-talented, and to see why they got where they are. When I was head of urology at Christchurch my view was don’t apply for a job unless you’ve been in places like Europe, because you have to reset a lot of your values, it makes you reset your thinking. And you’ve been working in Christchurch ever since? Yes, for 20 something years. I was able to keep working while we got the kidney stone bus going, but when the surgery bus got going it was like having a tiger by the tail, to get it going I had to work on it full-time. That’s when I retired from the public system. Do you miss working in the hospitals? There are things I miss. But the thing that makes a difference when I do is working with incredibly passionate people here. No one is here just to watch the clock. Has anything gone badly wrong? Well, the main complaint really has been that people didn’t like walking out of the bus to the recovery rooms in their gowns – which is fair because they’re open at the back. But what we do is low-risk day surgery, and anything higher-risk is done at a hospital. So we’re very careful about the cases we take and, touch wood, it’s all gone well for 16 to 17 years so far. What have you enjoyed the most? I always thought it was important we kept close to the public, and that’s what I’ve appreciated most: The unabashed enthusiasm from people. The great thing about rural people is that they often have a tremendous sense of humour.

My good crop of parsnips are spoiled buy a brown, rough surface round the crown. What can I do to avoid this next year? I do hope you can help.

Today’s winning question came from Joy Clark . From your description, it is possible that the soil is too heavy and may well have become waterlogged over the winter months. This often leads to brown colouring around the crown of parsnips. While they are a reasonably straightforward vegetable to grow, try raising the beds 100-120mm above exsiting ground level before planting your next season parsnips. The other possible explanation is exposure to light. If the mature parsnips have emerged slightly above soil level before harvesting, it is quite common for brown markings to appear on the crown. In this instance, either harvest immediately or cover the crowns with some free draining soil.

ROASTED CARROTS WITH ORANGES AND AVOCADO Ingredients 2 cloves Garlic, crushed 1 Red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 1 tsp Cumin seeds, toasted and ground 4 Tbsp Olive oil 500g Carrots, small, scrubbed ½ cup Vegetable stock 3 Oranges 1 Avocado, firm and ripe, halved, stone removed and peeled 1 Lemon, juiced ¼ cup Pomegranate seeds, optional 1 handful Basil leaves Directions Heat the oven to 200 deg C. Place the garlic, chilli and cumin in a small bowl and mix with one tablespoon olive oil to make a paste. Place carrots in an ovenproof dish and rub with the garlic paste. Pour ½ cup vegetable stock into the corner of the dish to prevent unsettling the paste. Cover the dish with foil and place in the oven. Roast carrots for 20-25min until just tender.

Directions

Remove from the oven and allow to cool to room temperature. Place carrots on a serving plate and reserve cooking juices. Segmenting an orange: Cut the top and bottom off the orange. Place one of the cut sides down on a board. Starting at the top and following the contour of the orange, cut off the skin, leaving no white pith behind. Working over a bowl to catch the juice, cut between the membranes to release orange segments, reserve juice. Place segments on top of the carrots as you go. Repeat with remaining oranges. Slice the avocado and place on the salad. Squeeze over the lemon juice.

Make a dressing by whisking the reserved orange juice with the remaining oil and flavour with some or all of the carrot juices. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Drizzle over enough dressing to moisten the salad. Scatter over pomegranate seeds, if using, and the basil leaves. COURGETTES, MINT AND BROWN RICE Ingredients 300g Courgettes 400g Broad beans 1 Ltr Vegetable stock, hot

Wipe the courgettes, then slice them. Put them in a colander in the sink, generously grind salt over them and leave for at least 20min. Pod the beans, cook them for 7-10min in very lightly salted boiling water, then drain. If the beans are large and you have the inclination, pop them out of their skins. Heat the stock in a saucepan and keep warm over a low heat. Peel the shallots or onion and chop finely. Cook in 40g of butter until soft but not coloured, stirring regularly so they don’t brown. Add the rice, stir to coat the grains in the butter, then pour in the wine. Let it almost evaporate, then start to add the hot stock a ladleful at a time, stirring almost continuously. You will find that the rice will take a good 40min to cook to tenderness – that is,

considerably longer than white risotto rice. As the rice approaches tenderness (at least 35min into cooking), squeeze the courgette dry and stir it in. Continue cooking then, as the rice is almost cooked, add the beans, chopped mint and, if you are using them, the courgette flowers. Check the seasoning, adding black pepper and a little salt (you may not need any salt at all), then stir in the remaining butter and the grated parmesan. Serve in warm shallow bowls, with a little more cheese if you wish.

Their friend Ouiser (Yvonne Martin) pops in now and again, with grumpy words and a heart of gold. The women reveal more of themselves in their salon chatter and laughter as the play progresses. Over the course of the play, we learn about their lives, their difficulties and tragedies. There is

much consternation when one of the women reveals she is pregnant, but one of the most powerful scenes is when M’Lynn talks to her friends about the death of her daughter. It is set in the 80s, when fashion had changed from long straight hair to big, wild permed hair. The style is very true to the period. The play is set in Louisiana in 1987 and based on real people and real events from the playwright’s life, giving it an added authenticity. Written as a drama, it still provides moments of laughter, mainly from the truths it portrayed. It was turned into a film, and went on to be nominated for an Academy Award, two American Comedy Awards, a Chicago Film Critics Association Award, two Golden Globes and a BAFTA. The Court has done Truvy’s hair salon proud.

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A BBC live studio-styled show crossed with a mythical world of kings and sorcerers may appear to be a difficult show to visualise. But that is the exact kind of show Monty Python and William Shakespeare enthusiast David Allen, 50, has written. Set in a radio booth, the show aims to transport audiences back to the 1950s and portray a group of actors attempting to produce a live radio play. The audience will witness the actors attempting to make a range of sound-effects for a radio show from forest rustles, dungeon drips to axolotl squeaks. It is a show within in a show with the live radio play featuring around a king who has defeated a sorcerer in the past. A Sorcerer’s Appendix was first successfully premiered in 2011. Six years later and a revived version of the show is set to be staged by NO Productions Theatre Collective at

While he could not remember what inspired the plot, he said the show has Monty Python and Shakespeare-styled themes. “Another thing that inspired the sorcerer was Alan Rickman and the Robin Hood film he was in,” he said. Characters such as The Nurse from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet were likely to appear in the show.

“There is a lot of humour and characters you will recognise because they are such a cliche,” he said. As well as writing the show, the Riccarton resident is an actor himself and will play the role of the evil sorcerer. Allen said while he would love to perform as a full-time actor, it has been difficult to make a career post-earthquake. “Other than The Court Theatre, there is nothing that can pay what you are worth,” he said. For Allen, it was a long road to writing A Sorcerer’s Appendix with him first beginning to write the show in 1998 and the first draft being more than five hours long. TUCKED AWAY behind Twizel and down a gravel road, Ben Ohau Road Cheese is a stunning little enterprise, specialising in off-thegrid cheese-making. It personifies the quiet but surefooted evolution of Twizel, which now proudly sports the moniker, the Heart of the High Country. The brains behind this rustic, unpretentious and deliciously distinctive endeavour is Matt Dunnicliff who was previously a radio producer, keeping the likes of Tony Veitch and Martin Devlin in line. Ten years ago, Matt and his wife, Tracey, bought this block of land with big sky lifestyle dreams, eager to escape the Auckland rat-race. Tracey was brought up in the hydro town, so it was very much a return to her roots. Matt had started dabbling in cheese-making after attending a demonstration in Auckland – and became hooked. Tracey, who was previously a scientist, is a qualified chef and cakemaker – she was a finalist in MasterChef, in 2010. For the past five years, Ben Ohau Road Cheese produces has been producing small quantities of premium quality artisan cheeses on a lifestyle block, underpinned

A converted shipping container is Matt’s cheese room, while a caravan has been configured as a commercial kitchen. The cheese-making takes place without a traditional electrical supply – the gas and hot water is already reliant on solar power and Matt is planning to go fully solar, soon. It is an inspirational work in progress. Over the summer months, Matt will make cheese four days a week, producing 1.5 tonnes of hand-

made cheese annually. I devoured one of his moreish tasting platters, where the cheeses thoughtfully celebrate a sense of place. My runaway favourite is the Aorangi Tangy, a soured curd creamy cheese matched with spicy pear jelly – a taste sensation with the local alpine salmon. Inventive, boutique enterprises are popping up all over the Mackenzie. Just down the road from the cheese-maker, I admired Skyscape, a new accommodation experience now open, which

consists of a luxury glass pod, crowned with a grass roof. Ultrachic and eco-friendly, SkyScape is also solar powered. Come spring, Lake Pukaki will become home to New Zealand’s only commercial hovercraft operation, offering cyclists a riveting way to start their Alps2Ocean adventure, alongside operating sightseeing trips up to the Tasman River. A fabulous way to get an insightful overview of the Twizel region is to join a Three Lakes Tour with Lakeland Explorer. Owned and operated by the delightful Jill Johnson, I joined some fellow guests on her Three Lakes Tour, which weaves together the watery jewels of Pukaki, Ohau and the rowing mecca of Ruataniwha, on a three hour romp. We shadowed the gleaming canals that liberally lace the region, replete with salmon and trout, spell-bound by their otherworldly hues which fast change

shade with the shifting light. There’s 50km of canals between Tekapo and Benmore. Jill remarked that with a width of 9m and a depth of 18m, you could actually float the QE II in the canals. Adjacent to Ben Ohau Station, the undulating expanse of the tawny tussocked-Ruataniwha Conservation Park serves up a spree of scenic walking options, which I made a pact to explore on a future visit. We also paused to soak up the cinematic grandeur of “Pelennor Field“ as seen in Lord of the Rings, and shot on Ben Ohau Station, at the foot of the mountain range. Ben Ohau Range’s reflected glory in the glossy canals behind Twizel are screensaver-worthy. I feverishly snapped away like a gannet. It was through Jill’s tour that I gained a major deeper appreciation for the sheer magnitude of the Waitaki hydro-power scheme. The sprawling network of inter-linking canals, lakes, spillways and power stations really is an engineering tour de force. A brand new Heritage Trail is set to open in Twizel this summer, where you can walk through the town and chart its remarkable back-story through the information panels.

By Ross Kiddie ONE OF the advantages of writing about vehicles, and the automotive industry, is that occasionally I’m asked to drive a vehicle which has yet to made commercially available. Often a manufacturer or distributor will import a trial vehicle to evaluate it for the local market. The latest chance for me to drive a model which falls into this category was from Kia New Zealand which is looking at making its Niro hybrid available in this country. The Niro is a compact sport utility vehicle, smaller than a Toyota RAV4 and Honda CRV, but while its compact proportions may be seen as a disadvantage it measures up everywhere else, so much so I really enjoyed my time with it, it is beautifully finished and functional. To be honest, it’s taken me a while to warm to hybrid technology, but in the case of the Niro, its system is quite “normal,’’ it works similarly to that of Toyota’s hybrid system. However, there is one fundamental difference, the Niro utilises a direct shift automatic gearbox against the continuously variable unit of Prius. Technicalities aside, when drive is selected the Niro operates much like any traditional transmission, the hybrid system works with a four-cylinder, 1.6litre engine and it is a system which Kia shares with Hyundai, the latter utilised in the Ioniq which is just establishing itself in New Zealand. Whereas the Ioniq is hatchback-based, the Niro is truly an SUV, and even though it is just 4.3m it translates its onboard space to a very usable family wagon, Kia claim a 373litre load space extending to 1371-litres with the rear seats folded flat. The cabin area is cosy but comfortable, and with leather seats and a host of other high quality trim elements you get the feeling the Niro is already punching above its weight. Of course, if it is a runner for this market, heated seats for South Island users would be must, they were fitted to the evaluation model. Kia’s hybrid system is rated at 77kW and 147Nm with extra power (32kW) available from electric

energy stored in the batteries and distributed alongside petrol power. In layman’s terms, the engine is utilised for drive to the front wheels and generating power for the batteries, which in turn is then transmitted to an electric motor to provide additional drive. I’m not saying they are overly noticeable, but being a double shift system you can feel it shift through the six steps. That doesn’t bother me, I quite like the feel, it makes the driver feel part of the car. The key figures with Niro go something like this: It is rated with a 4.4l/100km (64mpg) combined cycle average which is quite spectacular. If it was to land with 16in wheels that figures lists at just 3.8l/100km (74mpg), but the evaluation car was riding on 18in wheels. When I picked the vehicle up it was showing an almost 900km to empty reading which suggests it is going to go long distances between fill-ups. For the record, it was reading a 7l/00km average when I took the car back to the dealership. Kia also says that the Niro will accelerate to 100km/h from a standstill in 11.1sec and will top

end at 160km/h. By my reckoning that’s more than enough performance for the role it is intended to play. I took the test car on my usual high-country highway loop, it feels energetic enough through the accelerator, and when you need mid- range power, when overtaking for example, the flow of electric current provides a solid feeling of acceleration. The Niro is also a tidy handler, it feels light and agile. With the battery weight low down in the chassis, and at the rear, it feels settled and balanced in a corner. It also steers directly thanks to those big wheels fitted with grippy Michelin Pilot tyres (215/45). Another plus is the fitment of a fully independent suspension system (front struts and rear double wishbones). The bonus is flexible wheel movement; while the springs and dampers are a nice compromise of comfort and the firming you need to keep body roll contained, it is an adept handler and one which you immediately feel comfortable with as a driver. Of course, there’s no pricing nor specification structure for Niro, but my opinion is that if it could be made available here at a competitive price it would be a good seller and it comes at a time where the focus on electric vehicles has never been greater. Yet, it also has the benefit of both petrol power and electric energy for those who aren’t yet ready to abandon the concept of internal combustion engines. I’m hoping Kia will take the plunge and market the Niro here, it is an interesting car and I can’t imagine why it wouldn’t be successful.

Arona, 21, returned to help them defeat Wentworthville 2616 on Sunday after four months out of the game. In round five, Arona broke his leg while playing against the Blacktown Workers and thought his season was over. “I was on the ground and they kept showing the replay of it on the big screen. The crowd couldn’t even look at it,” said Arona. “I reached down there and pushed on my leg and it just felt like crunching. I thought yeah, nah that’s broken.” The former Canterbury Bulls

“My parents came up to watch my game on Sunday. When I finished I went to ask how Hornby got on, but it was written all over their faces,” said Arona. “I was really gutted that I couldn’t be part of that game this year. I was quite confident we were going to do it this year. I was talking to a few of them that week,” said Arona. The Warriors NSW Cup team have been the one shining light among what has otherwise been a torrid season for the club. The team are currently second on the competition ladder with two round-robin games remaining. “The boys are really tight and there’s a good vibe around our team,” said Arona. Arona hopes to push his case for selection over the next two weeks and during the play-offs.

Lillyman, 33, who joined the Warriors in 2009 after 62 games for North Queensland, was converted into a front rower in 2011. Of his 187 appearances for the club so far, 151 have been as a starting prop or as an interchange front rower, more than 130 of them with Matulino in the trenches with him.

On the field for 62min against the Raiders, Lillyman carted the ball up 15 times for 155m – the best of any forward in the match – and added 26 tackles. He is now averaging close to 128m and 26 tackles across his 20 games this year, superior to his numbers in the previous three seasons. Landscaping: Make a good first impression How mucH time do you spend at the front of your property? You probably just drive up the road, pull into your driveway, and maybe pause to check the mail. You don’t really spend very much time at all looking at the front of your house from the street and nor does anybody else. If someone did spend more than a minute or two looking at the front of your house, you’d probably take down their rego as a precaution. which leads me to the design of the front yard. How much garden can we take in during the 10 seconds or so of cursory glance that form first impressions, street appeal? No matter what your tastes, life philosophy or budget, your front garden is what represents your property – even if the rest of it is an unholy mess. In my case I’m guilty of being a winter garden sloth, so this year the unholy mess basically started at the front and, as far as I could tell when I bothered to look, went right to the back. There are some nice plants in the front of my place and the fence still looks okay. The thing that is missing is good continuity. Remedying this unfortunate state of affairs has required me to take stock and apply my top five front yard or “kerb culture” tips to myself. Less is more. when creating street appeal, the person viewing your property doesn’t have a lot of time to take in the information in front of them. It is important that they view the garden as complete, so having lots of different plants as eye candy or different materials thrown in is distracting. Your front garden will

Work with the surrounding landscape. This is an excellent way to develop ideas and tie your property into its environment.
